Anxiety can get out of control pretty fast. Kind of like weeds in the garden that seem to grow 5 feet tall in one afternoon. And just like weeds they can shade out and suck the nutrients for the good things that we are trying to grow.
In the garden it might be tomatoes or carrots but when we are talking mental health, anxiety can shade out those positive self statements, make you forget to take those deep breaths *hello hyperventilation*, and leave you paralyzed.
Now, I am a huge fan of not making anxiety the enemy. Like Ana Gomez says, our bodies and feelings tell stories - and anxiety is a storyteller. Theories like Internal Family Systems have also argued for compassion for the anxious parts of us (and all parts of us!) as trying to protect us in some way - even when it doesn’t make sense. Most of the time anxiety is attempting to protect us from getting hurt, humiliated, rejected, abandoned, and so. much. more. And at the same time, letting anxiety run the show isn’t always the best choice. Check out my blog HERE about a technique to turn down the volume on feelings vs. making them the enemy. So first things first, it is always crucial and important to identify and honor the feeling as well as the message it has to give. But next, it can be really helpful for kids and teens to have strategies for what we would call containment or specific strategies and ways to set those feelings aside and not let them run rampant - like weeds through the garden of your life. I wanted to share with you my top three ways to contain anxiety with some of my favorite play therapy activities in this on-the-house Mini Master Class HERE!
