Sound familiar?
Does your child have big emotions, worries, anger, or challenging behaviors? Are they moody, withdrawn, or making unhelpful choices? Has your child been through something really tough or scary, just aren’t acting like themselves, or are you getting calls of concern from your child’s school? If this sounds familiar and you feel like you have tried everything to help your child, but nothing is working to make things better, you’re in the right place.
Therapy can help
Through therapy, children can be empowered to live a life where they can feel confident, in control, and joyful, allowing them to thrive within their family, friendships, school, and community. Therapy can help young people develop new ways of thinking and feeling as well as learn a new set of skills, have healthier relationships, and make helpful choices they can feel proud of. Through this process young people will develop a better understanding of themselves and their feelings so they can express feelings and thoughts in a healthier way.
Every young person has their own unique strengths and talents and therapy can help emphasize and grow what young people are doing right every day. When young people can grow in their strengths they are able to move forward and live life as the best version of themselves.
Parenting a young person with such big needs and being “in the trenches” every day while your child struggles is tough. You may feel like you want to quit, there is no hope, or that you have tried everything. Therapy can bring a new perspective to the sources of stress and give your child and family new tools and support to move forward.
Therapy also helps children and families know that they are not alone or the only ones who are experiencing these kinds of difficulties and stressors. It is also true that nobody has walked through these struggles exactly in the same way with the same needs as your child and family. Because of this, therapy is tailored to meet the specific needs of your child and family and is not a “one size fits all” approach.
There is hope for healing and growth, your child can move forward!

What is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy is the use of toys and other play materials to create changes in thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Due to a child’s brain development and the specific way children learn they are not able to engage in traditional “talk therapy” to create improvements in their struggles like adults are. Play is their “language” and the specific ways they use the toys are their “words”. Children might use the sand tray, dolls, dramatic play costumes, puppets, or numerous other toys to help them make sense of their areas of difficulty and create insight on how to move forward.

What is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)?
EMDR is a type of therapy that can help young people heal from traumatic experiences. When someone has a traumatic or an adverse experience, this experience gets stuck is not “filed” correctly in the brain and it can create numerous difficulties for the person including big emotions, challenging behaviors, or many fears. In EMDR young people will explore a memory through talking, drawing, or sand tray paired with stimulating both the emotional and concrete sides of their brain in a way that helps the memory “file” correctly to alleviate symptoms.

What is Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT)?
TF-CBT is a type of therapy to help children heal from trauma. It helps children learn about trauma, learn relaxation skills, identify and regulate feelings, and about adaptive versus maladaptive thoughts. Next children write a story about their trauma adding feelings and thoughts and evaluate the story to identify if thoughts are healthy or unhealthy. Unhealthy thoughts are changed and the child reads the story to a supportive caregiver and plans for future safety are created.
