Congratulations!
You are here because either you just finished graduate school and are starting the journey to licensure OR you want to dive deep into a new area of expertise! Either way, I’m glad you’re here – you're about to start something amazing!
I'm Ann Meehan,
of Meehan Mental Health Services. Finding and committing to the supervisor who is going to be the best fit for your is tough and essential to your development as a therapist. You want to make sure someone who you will be spending quite a bit of time with is going to support you in the ways that you need. You want to know that their style and areas of expertise with match well in your development into the therapist you want to become.
While I am really glad you are here, I am not the best supervision fit for everyone. I am hoping this information will help you decide if I am the right fit for you! I am an approved supervisor with the Minnesota Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy, am a Registered Play Therapist – Supervisor (RPT-S) with the Association for Play Therapy, and am an EMDRIA Certified EMDR Therapist and Consultant providing supervision towards EMDR Certification through EMDRIA. I provide both in person supervision in the Duluth, Minnesota area and virtual supervision. I support my supervisees both with developmental of clinical skills but also self reflection, documentation skills, developing and streamlining procedures, and professional development goals. I work best with therapists who want to grow into their full potential and become the best versions of themselves as well as desire an active and engaged supervision experience.
Supervision Philosophy
Whether you are starting out in your journey towards licensure or want to develop a competency in an area of specialty of working with young children and adolescents or working with trauma, supervision can provide you the support you need to grow into the professional you want to be.
Supervision is an interactive process that improves the quality of client care, increases a supervisee’s clinical skill, and nurtures their professional growth and confidence. My supervision approach is developmental in nature and provides an environment of growth for a therapist to honestly evaluate their work performance, therapeutic skill, and areas for further development. Supervision is seen as a safe space to look at your current skill set, become exposed to new ideas, and have the confidence to take risks in trying new techniques with clients to enable you to grow your clinical skill set.
Areas of Expertise and Theoretical Orientation
Overall I primarily use a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy approach and truly believe that if clients can identify and shift maladaptive thought patterns and core beliefs about themselves and the world, they will feel better and make choices to improve their happiness, quality of life, and functioning in relationships. In my play therapy practice I utilize both directive and nondirective play therapy approaches dependent on the child’s presenting problem and age. I am primarily a Client Centered Play Therapist for nondirective work and a Cognitive Behavioral Play Therapist for more directive work. I have experience in Sand Tray, creative techniques, portable play therapy, emotional regulation skills, and bibliotherapy. I also work to support clients from a behavioral perspective to identify what supports they need to add to their lives or things they need to remove in their environment to increase their mental health functioning. When working with children, I have extensive experience in using behavioral plans with parents to help lead to increased desired behaviors. I use Choice Theory to help clients identify the motivation of their choices, what needs are being met, and if their choices are working for themselves, their relationships, and others. I am additionally Certified in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) through EMDRIA, and am a Consultant for EMDR Certification through EMDRIA. I specialize in using EMDR with young children and adolescents. I am also certified in Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) to support those clients who have been impacted by trauma.
I also believe that each client has their own unique strengths and talents are work hard to reinforce what a client is doing right each day. When clients grow in their strengths they improve their ability to manage their mental health. Additionally, I believe the Person Centered principles of unconditional positive regard, empathy, and genuineness are necessary for client growth and process in therapy.
I have experience providing therapy and skills work in a multitude of different settings such as in home, at school, in a juvenile detention setting, and in outpatient mental health.
What is the difference between supervision and consultation?
This is a great question AND can be pretty confusing. When I am supervising someone I am legally liable and responsible for their actions in therapy with the clients they are treatment, and therefore can insist on a specific course of action, treatment, or more specific details about clients. If we are engaging in supervision we are typically working towards your state LPCC licensure.
For other therapists who may already be licensed but are looking to add a new set of skills related to Play Therapy or EMDR our work may be considered consultation. In consultation I am not responsible for the work of consultees, and as a consultee you can choose to implement suggestions or feedback, or not! For EMDR Certification, the relationship is considered consultation. For the Association for Play Therapy if a therapist is unlicensed our work is considered supervision, but if you are licensed any consultation work we do together can count towards becoming a Registered Play Therapist ™. See more about becoming a Registered Play Therapist HERE and learn more about the differences between consultation and supervision HERE!
