Real talk? My absolutely favorite sand tray prompt is vanilla. The most basic of the basic.
What is it? Well, it’s… “Create a world”.
Now as basic as this is, it is also very intentional. I prefer this prompt over “create your world” because swapping out a for your allows a greater level of distance and metaphor for the clients I see. And the result? Deeper more meaningful trays for my clients who tend to have high levels of trauma, dysregulation, and avoidance.
But what about for the kids and teens that are stuck? What about young people that are paralyzed by the wide open space of this prompt? What about kids and teens who have a specific issue they need to go deeper? Well my friend, that’s where sandtray prompts come in! There are tons of lists that have upwards of 200 prompts and in these books HERE and HERE are filled with directives. BUT if you are looking to avoid the overwhelm with sifting and sorting through lists of prompts I wanted to offer you this on-the-house FREE Download of the Top 10 Sandtray Prompts I use in my sandtray practice that are the most effective with kids and teens! These prompts can be used for specific issues like divorce or struggles with school and fit best with young people who are able to tolerate the distress of focusing more directly on the presenting problem, symptoms, or difficulties!
