Have you ever been curious about the world of sandtray?
You know, where clients create worlds in the sand with little miniatures.
BUT let's back it up a minute. Sand tray is so much more than the creation of worlds. It is the projection of the subconscious and unconscious into the world of the tray. It is the safety of metaphor that allows clients to do deeper processing. It is the story that unfolds when defenses are lowered. It is the ability to access both the right hemisphere (with pictures and emotions) and create integration with the left hemisphere of the brain (with words and logic). The modality that when your hands hit the tray and the sand it opens up deeper pathways to healing.
Yea, you could say I am sand tray obsessed. I am actually writing this blog on top of my sandtray that doubles as my coffee table (on wheels of course so we can move the sand tray anywhere it makes sense in the office!). And if this sounds like something you have been interested in for years or are curious about starting - listen up! I wanted to share with you my absolutelyFREE downloadable checklist of what you need to start using sandtray with your clients! Inside are the top resources I share with clinicians when they ask me about starting sandtray! I wanted to share the first two on my list here to get you started in thinking about what it would take to use the transformational powers of sandtray and play therapy! (more on that HERE!) First, before you go out and look for the 2,532 miniatures you just HAVE to have for your collection you need to know what you are looking for any why. Like play therapy, sandtray therapy has specific categories of miniatures and reasons for including them. So before you start selecting your materials you need to check off the first two boxes on the list! First - you need a sandtray training! This is the first step in learning any new skill or therapeutic technique or method. Beginning an intervention without the proper training could cause harm so you want to make sure you know what you are doing and why! There are a TON of amazing sandtray therapists out there that have accessible and virtual trainings - which is amazing! You should also look into the World Association of Sand Therapy Professionals. If books are your jam you absolutely NEED to add Sandtray Therapy to your list by Linda E. Homeyer and Daniel S. Sweeney. Another excellent text is Sandplay Therapy: A Step-By Step Manual for Psychotherapists of Diverse Orientations by Barbara Labovitz Boik and E. Anna Goodwin. Although it is on Sandplay, it offers a framework to utilize with any therapeutic orientation. The next box on the list - consultation! Whether this is formal consultation with someone acting in a consultant or supervisor role or a trusted colleague with experience in sand tray it is essential to have someone you can connect with on your questions and stuck points in real time! If you want to know more about what it takes to integrate sandtray into your therapy grab my free downloadable checklistHERE! This is absolutely something that transformed my practice and I think it could be amazing for your practice too!
This free download is filled with the training and skills, material basics, and a master list of the miniature categories that need to be represented on your shelves! Grab your FREE copy HERE!
